Stranding Investigations/Education Position
Six-Month Apprenticeship Program

Job Summary

Under supervision respond to dead and live marine mammals and sea turtles, collect data on species, maintain marine mammal and sea turtle database, keeps in compliance with Federal reporting obligations - provides support to necropsy program - supervised sea turtle husbandry tasks as outlined in Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Task Book, Type III & IV - provide logistical field research and reporting support - provide support to the Education and Outreach Program.

General Accountabilities

  • Manage calls to the 24-HR New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Hotline

  • Respond to dead and live marine mammals and sea turtles, collect data on species, circumstances of stranding, and life history information

  • Coordinate with towns for disposal of examined animals

  • Maintain marine mammal and sea turtle databases, as well as digital and physical data records

  • Support the marine mammal and sea turtle necropsy program and related projects

  • Provide husbandry support to sea turtles when in our critical care triage facility

  • Provide logistical support in the field on seal and sea turtle health assessment research projects

  • Provide collection and reporting on research satellite tagging, land, boat, and aerial survey projects

  • Disseminate project information to field team and educational staff

  • Support educational outreach programs to foster marine conservation, including leading volunteer training, coordinating volunteers for events, performing lectures, beach cleanups, and leading educational activities like seal walks and cruises

  • Adding events to amseas.org and maintaining online calendar postings and help maintain beach cleanup database

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management

Job Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree preferred in Marine Biology or Conservation and Management

  • First Aid Training

  • Incident Command System (ICS)

  • Hazwoper Training

  • Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

  • Available to work weekends, and occasional early morning or late night hours

Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Proficient in Excel and Word

  • Experience working with R and GIS Programs

  • Complex problem solving

  • Ability to work alone and in a team environment

  • Ability to drive a four-wheel vehicle and trailer

  • Experience driving on beaches

Enters data and conducts data analysis for reports and publications. Runs all major events under the Incident Command System and completes Incident Action Plans for all events.
